Annabel and a Miller's tale
She was one of the beauties of her day, bringing style to the high society set whose glamorous lifestyle centred on Mayfair's clubs and casinos.
So perhaps it is fitting Lady Annabel Goldsmith should be played on screen in her Sixties prime by Sienna Miller, the present-day darling of London's glitterati. Miss Miller (right) is on the shortlist to appear in the film of Douglas Thompson's book The Hustlers, whose rights have been bought by Martha Fiennes, the sister of actors Ralph and Joseph. The book focuses on how the late John Aspinall, a great friend of Lady Annabel and her husbands, Mark Birley and Sir Jimmy Goldsmith, ran a gaming scam at The Clermont Club. Its publication last year led to Lady Annabel, 73, rubbishing Aspinall's former business partner John Burke, Thompson's chief collaborator.
Insiders say Miss Fiennes, who is writing the screenplay, is keen for her brother Ralph to play Aspinall and has Miss Miller in mind to portray Lady Annabel. Says a source: "Sienna would be perfect to play Lady Annabel, who was a great beauty."
Thompson, who hopes to make £250,000 from the film deal, tells me: "There has been a lot of speculation about who will play the leads, but Clive Owen is a dead ringer for John Burke."
